The positioning and tasks of the Cabinet of the Governor are taken from the statutory duties, powers and responsibilities of the Governor.
The tasks of the Cabinet are described in the Establishment decree of the Cabinet of the Governor of Sint Maarten.
The Cabinet:
- identifies and analyzes political, administrative, and societal developments;
- advises the Governor on the aforementioned;
- supports the Governor in the formation of a new government;
- handles the publication of the (in)formation mandates issued by the Governor.
The Cabinet:
- reviews draft national ordinances and decrees submitted to the Governor by ministers or the Parliament;
- performs consular duties on behalf of the Governor. This includes the issuance of passports and visas. It also includes the processing of applications to obtain the Dutch nationality;
- forwards special requests for overflight permits and port visits to the Sint Maarten authorities;
- ensures the preparation of extradition decisions.
The Cabinet:
- maintains in contact with other government bodies (within and outside the Kingdom);
- supports the Governor during receptions and visits;
- makes appointments with and for the Governor;
- handles letters and requests addressed to the Governor.
